Kids and Families
Come to the Gallery with your family and explore art together! The Gallery’s weekend family programs and self-guided materials are designed to help start conversations about art with children, and we have programs for all ages.
Programs for Kids and Families
Stories and Art
On the second Sunday of each month, we invite families to join us for Stories and Art. Tales of distant times and faraway lands inspire children of all ages to view art in new ways. Gallery teaching staff tell folktales, myths, and exciting stories from all over the world that highlight unique features of selected objects in the Gallery’s collection. Drawing materials are available for older children. No registration required; please meet near the couches in the lobby at 1:00 pm.
Family Day
On Family Day we invite families to explore the collection and buildings together through tours, storytelling, and artmaking activities. Enjoy discovering the collections and learning more about the art right here in New Haven. No registration required.

Coloring Book
This coloring book was originally produced in 2004 by the Gallery in collaboration with Yale University students so that kids could take home images of highlights from the museum’s collection. We’ve scanned and digitized the coloring book from our archives for the enjoyment of our online visitors. Download and print the pages, and color in the illustrations using crayons, colored pencils, markers, or paint to transform the line drawings into your own works of art. We hope this book will inspire you to find other works in the collection and make your own drawings.
Post your masterpiece on Instagram with the hashtags #YaleArtGalleryAtHome, #BuddingArtist. Don’t forget to tag us @yaleartgallery.
Self-Guided Activities
We encourage you to explore the galleries using our self-guided family activities, available at the Information Desk or as a PDF download. Our family guides are designed to be used in the gallery spaces to help you look more closely at art and to enjoy your time together in the museum. Download PDFs of the following guides:
- Guide for Families (PDF)
- Self-Guided Architecture Activity (PDF)
- Felt and Yarn Kit (PDF)
Nolen Center Library
The Nolen Center Library is the heart of the Gallery’s new Nolen Center for Art and Education. The library houses a focused collection of books, exhibition catalogues, articles, documents, and databases related to the highlights of our museum, and it is open to all visitors.
