LATITUDE: 30°53'60"N / LONGITUDE: 34°45'53"E, October 9, 2011. Earthwork preparation for the planting of the Jewish National Fund (JNF) Ambassador Forest as part of its afforestation campaign to provide a green belt around the city of Beersheba (Heb., Beʼer Shevaʽ/Arabic, Bīr a-Ssabʽ). The JNF is a nongovernmental Zionist organization founded in 1901 for the purpose of buying land, on behalf of world Jewry, for the foundations of a Jewish state in Ottoman-controlled Palestine. Today the JNF is active in afforestation and presents itself as a “global environmental leader.” In the summer of 2010, the homes of the Abu Jāber, Abu Mdīghem, and Abu Freiḥ families, of the al-Tūri tribe, which were on the site surrounding the two remaining trees, were demolished, and the families expelled. The land is currently claimed by the Bedouin community as part of the surrounding area of the unrecognized village of al-ʽAraqīb., from the series Desert Bloom

LATITUDE: 31°25'14"N / LONGITUDE: 34°28'24"E, October 10, 2011. Decommissioned British-era munitions storage base near the Gaza border, constructed in the early 1940s in anticipation of an attack by the Germans from North Africa during WWII. Shown here are some of the 170 soil mounds built in a square missing rib formation as fortification and protection from the wind. Low walls along one side are to prevent an explosion from one storage space igniting a neighboring site. Following the German defeat by the Allied forces in the battle of al-ʽAlamein, the fortifications proved unnecessary, and have not been used since 1942. The site is on the historical Bedouin villages of Abu Mʽēlek/Ḥasanāt, of the Tarabīn tribe, which were evacuated during Operation Yoʼav. Nearby is Kibbutz Beʼeri (lit., “my well”), established in 1946 as one of eleven “points” of Jewish settlement planned to assure a Jewish presence in the area prior to the partition of Palestine., from the series Desert Bloom

LATITUDE: 30°53'60"N / LONGITUDE: 34°45'53"E, October 9, 2011. Demolished remains of a Bedouin home and fenced area within the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development experimental site, started in around 2000 and currently still active. The house, which is made of light and fragile material, is typical of Bedouin structures, and the evidence on the ground suggests that the house was voluntarily evacuated and demolished without a struggle. The land was confiscated so as not to impede the work of the experimentation. In the upper left corner of the image are two circular dark patches, the remains of staining from the herd that was kept within a sire (livestock pen) on the site. The two white circles right of the fencing are the remains of wells along a channel that has been dug from the streambed., from the series Desert Bloom

LATITUDE: 31°3'13"N / LONGITUDE: 34°28'10"E, November 13, 2011. Tracks of recent passage along an improvised route through the Ḥalutza Sands toward the Egyptian border. This section of the border zone between the Negev and Egyptian Sinai, on the former Palestinian village of Nabaʽāt, of the Tarabīn tribe, is more than 20 kilometers away from the nearest town and several kilometers away from the border. The area is one of the most frequently used clandestine routes for migrants seeking asylum from war and famine in sub-Saharan Africa, mainly Eritrea and Darfur. In 2013, a fence was built along the entire length of the border to block asylum-seekers from entering Israel., from the series Desert Bloom

LATITUDE: 30°45'60"N / LONGITUDE: 34°47'31"E, October 9, 2011. Garden perimeter wall and irrigation channels along a steep ridge in the vicinity of the ancient city of Ovdat/Abdāt (Heb./Arabic). The upper line of rocks forms the outer wall of the garden and also serves as a footpath above which can be seen the faint trails left by Bedouin pastoral herds. Rainwater is channeled along the descending lines of rock to the garden within the streambed, each small walled section retaining its own water to minimize runoff. The faint lines that run parallel to the upper wall are traces left by herds of animals moving over the terrain. These walled gardens enhance water retention in an area of extremely low precipitation, as well as demarcating boundaries of ownership. This garden, measuring more than a kilometer in length and a quarter of that distance at its widest point, winds along the base of a hillside., from the series Desert Bloom

LATITUDE: 31°3'28"N / LONGITUDE: 34°51'7"E, November 22, 2011. Initial earthworks and excavation in the construction of ʽIr HaBahadim (lit., “city of training bases”), as it is commonly known, to be named the Ariel Sharon Training Complex, after the former Prime Minister. Planned for 30,000 army personnel, this mega-base is scheduled to open in 2015. The base will house the Israeli Military Armaments School, Logistics Training School, Military Police School, and other military training centers that are being transferred for budgetary reasons to the central Negev from their former sites in the prime real estate areas of greater Tel Aviv. The base will include training facilities, sports areas, a shopping mall, synagogues, hotels, cinemas, and entertainment facilities. There are unrecognized Bedouin villages east of the site, and some families of the unrecognized Bedouin village of Wādi al-Mshash are contained within it., from the series Desert Bloom

LATITUDE: 31°3'15"N / LONGITUDE: 34°51'23"E, November 22, 2011. Evacuated Bedouin homestead of the Zeno family, of the ʽAzāzme tribe, in the unrecognized Bedouin village of Wādi al-Mshash, adjoining the new ʽIr HaBahadim Israeli military mega-base. The largest of the three pens shows the remains of the perimeter fence of the corral, the entrance to which can be seen in the bottom of the space. The site is now a closed military zone with some families of Wādi al-Mshash contained within it. Residents of the village were internally displaced citizens removed from the Ḥalutza region by the government in the 1950s. The government plans to move the residents, once again, to Segev Shalom/Shgēb al-Salām (Heb./Arabic), one of the townships built for the relocation and sedentarization of Bedouins, in order to provide for the further expansion of the military base., from the series Desert Bloom

LATITUDE: 30°52'27"N / LONGITUDE: 35°16'1"E, October 9, 2011. Marks of passage and erasure along the historic north–south travel route. Once the main route to Eilat, the track now runs alongside Highway 90 and is still used by heavy vehicles, including bulldozers and military convoys. The white calcareous sediment and beds of salt and gypsum that make up the surface create a silt-like terrain that records the tire tracks. This particular section shows portions that have been washed away by flooding coming from the direction of the ancient Dead Sea tributaries., from the series Desert Bloom

LATITUDE: 30°51'47"N / LONGITUDE: 34°46'43"E, October 9, 2011. Seismic experiment in the outskirts of Midreshet Ben-Gurion (also known as Midreshet Sde Boker), the educational center and boarding school in which the former Prime Minister lived until his death, and where he and his wife, Paula, are entombed. Reflection seismology is a method of exploration geophysics that employs the principles of seismology to estimate the composition of the earth’s subsurface. The method is commonly used to probe for oil or more peculiar substances. The sixteen marks around the concentric circles are the openings of vertical holes, into which geological acoustic equipment is lowered. A charge is then placed in the center hole and detonated, with the residual reverberations of the blast detected by the peripheral sensors, forming an image of what lies beneath the surface., from the series Desert Bloom
