Pueblo Women’s Ceramics from the Patti Skigen Collection

A year-long installation highlights 18 works by Indigenous women artists from the recent gift of Patti Skigen, LL.B. 1968. Located in the American paintings and sculpture galleries in Street Hall, the display consists predominantly of contemporary southwestern ceramics by artists from the Pueblos of Acoma, Jemez, San Ildefonso, and Santa Clara, who are dedicated to innovating upon and passing on the techniques they have learned from their predecessors.

Pueblo artists have been making pottery for two millennia, and the works on view not only reflect ancestral knowledge—in the maker’s use of materials, methods, and motifs—but also express the potter’s individuality in her choice of size, shape, and design.
