Prints and Drawings

Although he is best known for his engravings after designs by other artists, Jan Harmensz. Muller was also an accomplished draftsman, as this impressive sheet makes clear. This drawing is most likely one of a series depicting Roman gods; similar drawings by Muller of Mars, Jupiter, Vulcan, and Pluto are preserved in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle in England. The figures in all of them are reversed, suggesting that the drawings were intended as designs for prints, although no such print series is known. In this drawing, for example, Neptune carries his trident in his left hand instead of in his right, as he usually does. Like most of Muller’s early works, Neptune exhibits the mannered style that the artist inherited from Hendrick Goltzius, Abraham Bloemaert, and Bartholomaeus Spranger.
