Foodeater Artist: Lisa Yuskavage (American, born 1962, M.F.A. 1986)

1996

Prints and Drawings

In her figurative work, Lisa Yuskavage reflects upon the dangers of misogyny, self-deprecation, social climbing, and the constant pursuit of perfection. With bulbous breasts, a distended belly, a bouffant hairdo, and pert nose and lips, the female figure in Foodeater blurs the lines between the formal tradition of the classical nude and bawdy sexuality. In her earlier print Philadelphia (1987.12.92), Yuskavage similarly worked within and challenged artistic traditions. Like Edgar Degas, she uses the monotype to experiment with form, anatomy, and space. The sketchy marks that articulate a woman walking down a building-lined street lend the work an aesthetically and psychologically unsettling air.
