American Paintings and Sculpture

On view, 2nd floor, American Art before 1900

This miniature is part of a set of five painted by John Trumbull, four of which depict members of the artist’s family. This one, however, is of Mary Julia Seymour. Known as Julia, she was the daughter of Thomas Seymour III, the first mayor of Hartford and a family friend of the artist. Trumbull also painted a miniature of Julia’s brother, Captain Thomas Y. Seymour (1832.38). Two years after this portrait was painted, Julia married Captain John Chenevard.
