The title strip at upper right, added to the mat in the early twentieth century, optimistically attributes this painting to Li Di (ca. 1125–ca. 1200), a painter at the Northern Song court. The style, particularly the density of the brushstrokes used to define the foliage and rocks, and the sense of abstraction in the rendering of landscape features, however, indicate that it was painted in the early years of court painting under the Ming dynasty. The theme of a solitary scholar traveling from a rustic retreat to a family compound was important in both painting and the three-dimensional arts in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries.
