Nocturne, from the First Venice Set (Venice, A Series of Twelve Etchings) Artist: James McNeill Whistler (American, 1834–1903)

1879–80

Prints and Drawings

Whistler signed this print with his trademark butterfly and “imp.” to indicate he did the printing himself. Though he often left a tab in the margin for his signature, he left the margin here intact, using the space for coded notations: “13. x.” to the left of his butterfly signature and “o x” to the right. These notes perhaps related to the series he was printing for the Fine Art Society, London.
