Cover and Frontispiece to Les Vieilles Histoires (The Old Stories) Artist: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864–1901)

1893

Prints and Drawings

Lithography had long been the medium of choice for music publishing. Given Lautrec's numerous connections with the owners, writers, and performers of music halls and cabarets, it is not surprising that he lent his lithographic crayon to the illustration of popular music. Even less so, since the publisher G. Ondet lived in the building that housed Lautrec's printer, Edw. Ancourt. In total, Lautrec did twenty-six covers for the songs of Désiré Dihau, bassoonist with the Paris Opera, through whom he had met Degas. For this cover, Lautrec shows Dihau leading the lyricist Jean Goudezki (as the Polish bear) by the nose across the Seine toward the Institut de France.
