Ancient Art

On view, 1st floor, Dura-Europos

This simple, elegant ring was formed by bending a sheet of gold into a roughly circular form and welding the ends together. The face is stamped with the Greek word omonoia (concord). Omonoia was important to both the Greeks and the Romans as a concept that signified everything from agreement between individuals (including marriage) to alliances between city-states. A poignant artifact of human life in ancient Dura-Europos, this ring attests to the continuity of social conventions throughout history.
