Provenance

Provenance

Alfred Morrison (1821–1897), London and Fonthill, Wiltshire, England (Lugt 151). Georges Ambrose Cardew(1865–1942), London (Lugt 1134). Murray Hornibrook (1874–1949), Ripley, Surrey, England and Etretat, France (Lugt 1873c) [see note 1].With Holman’s Print Shop, Boston, by about 1973; sold to James Wilson, Wallingford, Conn., about 1973; given to the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Conn., 2023

Note 1: Murray Hornibrook was a British born magistrate and print collector. His collection largely included 17th and 18th century portrait engravers, including many prints by Nanteuil. used the 1873c collector’s mark only after 1940, when he began collecting anew after his previous collections (Lugt numbers 1873a and 1873b) were stolen by the Nazis at his home in Etretat after the German invasion of France. Works stamped with the 1873c collector’s mark remained safely in his possession likely until the time of his death in 1949. (For more on Hornibrook and his collection, see: Frits Lugt Les Marques de Collections de Dessins & d'Estampes, http://www.marquesdecollections.fr/detail.cfm/marque/8505/total/1)
