Acquired in Margorejo, Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, by Rens Heringa, Surabaya, Indonesia, later Leiden, the Netherlands, 1980 [see note 1]; given to the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Conn, 2022

Note 1: Rens Heringa lived and worked in Indonesia between 1959 and 2000, surrendering her Dutch citizenship by law. As part of her graduate work at the University of Amsterdam she conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Kerek, East Java, Indonesia, focusing on local weaving traditions. Her collections were largely purchased from or traded with local weavers and textile merchants in the Kerek region between 1978 and 1990, with a few additional samples collected on subsequent visits to the region between 2001 and 2005.
