"$97.00 Currency Converted" Brooch from the "Increasing Value" Series Maker: Lauren Vanessa Tickle (American, born 1985)

In $97.00 Currency Converted, Lauren Vanessa Tickle called attention to the way that money intersects with labor, value, and adornment. She removed the most recognizable elements from ninety-seven U.S. one-dollar bills and reconstructed the remaining graphic elements in an intricate design inspired by kaleidoscopic patterns. Although she destroyed the currency’s monetary value, the object gained an even greater value as a result of her craft. The brooch also complicates the concept of adornment as a display of wealth, since the wearer of the brooch is visibly flaunting not only cash, but also evidence of Tickle’s labor.
