Harvesters on the Roman Campagna is one of a series of harvesting images that John Gadsby Chapman painted during his forty-five-year residence in Italy. His earlier career as an illustrator in New York reveals itself here in the details of storytelling. Sensitively painted, using strong color and with well-drawn figures, the scene depicts Italian peasants bringing the wheat in from the fields, threshing it, sifting it, and preparing it for market. It was the kind of picture that Americans on the Grand Tour loved to acquire. The frame is original to the painting and depicts references to the harvesttools, sifters, sheaths of wheat, and fruit.
