Following a tradition of American landscape photography that traces back to the U.S. Geological Surveys in the mid-nineteenth century, Victoria Sambunaris photographs the United States on cross-country road trips. For the last two decades, she has spent between three and seven months each year on the road, equipped with maps, books on regional history and geology, camping gear, and a 5 × 7 wooden field camera. Sambunaris’s large-format color photographs bear witness to the ways in which human industry and natural forces alike have shaped the land over time. The Haleakalā volcano, seen in this image, formed the majority of the island of Maui and was designated a national park in 1976.
