Prints and Drawings

This etching reproduces the stucco design surrounding the fresco of Danae in the Gallery of Francis I at the château of Fontainebleau. Here, however, the central scene differs from that at the château and instead depicts a peaceful landscape and a fortified city. Some scholars believe that this landscape represents the place where the mythological princess Danae resided and gave birth to her son Perseus.
