Game Room, from the series Tinsel and Blue Artist: Sasha Rudensky (American and Russian, born U.S.S.R. (Russia) 1979, M.F.A. 2008)

2010

Photography

Sasha Rudensky’s photographs of life in post-Soviet Russia reveal a country in transition—one still reliant on functional Soviet goods, yet increasingly obsessed with the acquisition of flashy Western products. Taken nearly two decades after the 1991 collapse of the U.S.S.R., Game Room pictures a Catholic boy in choir robes posed at a ping-pong table and illuminated from behind by an otherworldly light bursting from a basement window. The boy’s innocence is accentuated by the glowing whiteness of his robes and the virginal blue of the table and carpet that surround him.
