Panorama from St. Mark's Basin (1) Artist: Mortimer Menpes (British, 1855–1938)

1910–13, based on composition before 1902

Prints and Drawings

Mortimer Menpes left school to work in Whistler’s studio and became his most devoted pupil. Even after the pair had a falling out in 1887—Whistler was angry that Menpes had dared to travel to Japan, a country whose art Whistler constantly emulated though had never bothered to visit—Menpes continued to pay tribute to the older artist in his art, both in style and subject. Menpes went on etching trips to Venice in 1902 and 1910, generating his own set of Venice prints in the process. As it had done for Whistler in 1880, the Fine Art Society, London, in March 1911 exhibited Menpes’s views of Venice, many of which are displayed here.
