Prints and Drawings

Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, like Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione before him, used figure studies as an opportunity to demonstrate his technical virtuosity in etching, and to engage in an artistic rivalry with other European printmakers. While he based his compositions on paintings by his father, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, the younger Tiepolo was also looking at Castiglione’s Small Studies of Heads from the previous century; he may even have owned some of Castiglione’s work. Tiepolo likely also drew inspiration from similar prints by the seventeenth-century Dutch artist Rembrandt, which were extremely popular and circulated widely in Italy during this time
