Portrait of Atiya Fyzee (1877–1967) Artist: Samuel Fyzee-Rahamin (Indian, 1880–1964)

late 19th century

Asian Art

For this portrait of his wife, Samuel Fyzee Rahamin used traditional paper and watercolors and followed long-standing conventions of Indian portraiture, including placing the subject in the center of the composition and choosing an evocative but not necessarily recognizable setting. Also known by the honorific begum, reserved for Muslim women of high status in India, Atiya Fyzee was born in Istanbul and studied in London. She was a noted author, social reformer, and artistic patron.
