Prints and Drawings

Forced to flee Iraq as a teenager, Ahmed Alsoudani draws artistic inspiration from his experiences and memories growing up in Baghdad. The nameless, disturbing head in this print is composed of exploded fragments stitched together with bands and metal bolts. The violence of this assemblage is emphasized by the enormity of the head that dominates the dark, amorphous background. Thinly etched lines roughly delineate the features of the face, which is overwhelmed by prosthetic protrusions and pestilent growths. The circulatory system of pipes and veins almost recalls a devastated cityscape. Yet, with its lack of explicit references, the image conveys a broader vision of violence and horror.
