Civilization Landscape No. 073, from the series Civilization Landscape

Artist: Qin Feng (Chinese, born 1961)

2004

Asian Art

A leading avant-garde artist who makes use of traditional calligraphic materials, Qin Feng displays an unrestricted energy with the brush. Whereas his recent works are explosive in size and style and incorporate themes around his international upbringing and later experiences with Western art-making practices, this earlier piece is more conservative and literary in character. Surrounded by largely illegible calligraphic writing, thick marks of black ink seem to form the figure of a dragon amid violent waters. The creature’s head rises vertically at center, while its body extends to the right and left as though writhing around in agony or in rage. In this “landscape”—as suggested by the work’s title—the dragon, god of water, suffers the effects of civilization’s contamination of nature.
