Out My Window, Brooklyn, Snow, from the series Out My Window Artist: Gail Albert Halaban (American, born 1970, M.F.A. 1996)

2007

Photography

Departing from the voyeuristic tradition of street photography, Gail Albert Halaban creates her carefully staged images with the full permission of her subjects. The vantage point of this photograph shows the division between the apartment residents and the surrounding city, suggesting the inevitable visibility and exposure of urban life. Halaban explores the dichotomy of exposure and concealment, which is especially pertinent in today’s moment of social distancing and of monitored behavior in the digital age.
