Obverse Description: In upper corners, "FIVE" superimposed on "V" in scrollwork oval on l. and "5" in scrollwork circle on r.; across top, in cursive, Montgomery - 1st Jan. 1864. In medallions to l. and r., RECEIVABLE / IN / PAYMENT and ALL TAXES / AND / PUBLIC DUES. Above and around central vignette, THE STATE OF ALABAMA; below, in various fonts and cursive, Will pay FIVE DOLLARS to bearer / Redeemable in CONFEDERATE TREASURY NOTES or in FIVE / PER CENT. COUPON BONDS of the State at the option of the State. (Signed) W. H. Greene COMPTROLLER and D. B. Graham TREASURER. In small print at bottom, Engraved by W[..... ] and Lith.& Printed by J. T. Paterson & Co., Augusta, Ga. Central vitnette of overseer and slaves picking cotton; at lower l., vignette of Liberty holding cap in long pole in l. hand; at lower r., bench below tree (?). The lower central legend is superimposed on a large green "V".
