Thomas Robert Way based this image on a photograph taken in Paris in 1878, the year of the Ruskin verdict and just before Whistler declared bankruptcy. Way was a well-known lithographer who, along with his father, aided Whistler with printing the First Venice Set and introduced Whistler to the process of lithography.
