The Virgin Adoring the Sleeping Child Woodcutter: Andrea Andreani (Italian, 1558/59–1623)
After: Francesco Vanni (Italian, 1564–1610)

ca. 1591

Prints and Drawings

This Andreani woodcut and an etching by Francesco Vanni both reproduce (in reverse) one of Vanni’s four paintings for the cataletto (funeral bier) of the Confraternity of Santa Caterina in Fontebranda in Siena, painted in 1591. Through diffusion in prints, this composition became one of the best known and most copied of Vanni’s designs. This woodcut has not traditionally been attributed to Andrea Andreani, but its technique and circumstantial evidence—the dates when Andreani was in Siena and the fact that he was a member of the Confraternity of Santa Caterina—make it highly likely that the print is by him.
