Twilight in the Catskills Artist: Sanford Robinson Gifford (American, 1823–1880)

1861

American Paintings and Sculpture

On view, 2nd floor, American Art before 1900

When it was first exhibited in New York in 1861, this panoramic view of Kauterskill Clove in the Catskills made Sanford Robinson Gifford’s reputation. The critics praised the expressive intensity with which Gifford responded to a quintessentially American place, much beloved by him. The fiery palette, dead trees, dangerous ledge, and treacherous drop of the waterfall into the valley also seem to mirror the agitated mood of the nation as it faced the outbreak of the Civil War.
