Ball Toss, Coney Island, Brooklyn Artist: Lisa Kereszi (American, born 1973, M.F.A. 2000)

In the tradition of photographers such as Walker Evans, Lisa Kereszi presents the American landscape as a series of signs and symbols. Ball Toss, Coney Island, Brooklyn pictures a mural of a floating hand tossing a ball, with trash scattered below—the remains of a day at the amusement park. Stripped of context and people, the image evokes the excitement and carefree quality of a carnival on a summer day. In much of her work, Kereszi uses her camera to reveal the beauty of discarded and neglected things.
