Langdon Hammer, the Niel Gray, Jr., Professor of English and Department Chair, considers the woodblock prints made by Joel Shapiro for Arion Press’s 2017 letterpress edition of Hart Crane’s poem “The Bridge.” Hammer places Shapiro’s prints in the context of the long dialogue between modern literature and art in America—to which Crane and Shapiro have been central. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Joel Shapiro: Plaster, Paper, Wood, and Wire.
