Norman Lewis’s important untitled work of 1973 was acquired by the Gallery in 2011 and subsequently underwent extensive conservation treatment; this spring, the work went on view at the Gallery for the first time. Join Key Jo Lee, Ph.D. candidate in the History of Art and the Rose Herrick Jackson Fellow of American Paintings and Sculpture, and Cynthia Schwarz, Associate Conservator of Paintings, as they discuss the conservation of the artwork and the discoveries they made about Lewis’s formal process, technique, and emphasis on materiality. By looking beneath the surface of the painting, both through a close technical examination and a re-examination of Lewis’s oeuvre at the crossroads of artistic freedom and civic unrest, this talk reveals the complexity of Lewis’s work as a black Abstract Expressionist at the height of the Civil Rights era. Space is limited.
