In 1989 the New York–based nonprofit Visual AIDS (https://visualaids.org/) organized the first Day With(out) Art, a call to the art world for mourning and action in response to the AIDS crisis. The Yale University Art Gallery is proud to partner with Visual AIDS for the 30th annual Day With(out) Art by presenting Still Beginning (52 mins.), a program of seven newly commissioned videos responding to the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic by Shanti Avirgan, Nguyen Tan Hoang, Carl George, Viva Ruiz, Iman Shervington, Jack Waters/Victor F. M. Torres, and Derrick Woods-Morrow.

A panel discussion follows the screening, including featured artist Viva Ruiz in conversation with Gregg Gonsalves, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, Yale School of Public Health, and Associate (Adjunct) Professor of Law, Yale Law School; Roderick Ferguson, Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and American Studies; and Alex Fialho, Ph.D. student in the History of Art and African American Studies, to consider the continued urgency of HIV/AIDS in the contemporary moment while revisiting resonant cultural histories from the past three decades.

Presented in conjunction with the Yale Office of LGBTQ Resources, the Yale School of Public Health, and the Yale University Art Gallery‘s Martin A. Ryerson Lectureship Fund.
