Purchased at a large market in Ìbàdàn, Nigeria, by Gretchen Vanderploeg Swibold (born 1933) and Richard E. Swibold (1931–2019), North Canton, Conn., probably 1964 [see note]; given to the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Conn., 1971

NOTE: Richard E. Swibold worked as an architect for Stanley Engineering in Monrovia, Liberia, from 1959 to 1963 and for Robert S. MacMillan Architects and Planners in Lagos, Nigeria, from 1963 to 1965.
