Albert and Eszti Votaw collected the piece in either Mali or the Ivory Coast between 1966-1981 when the family was living in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.The piece was then was given to the parents of Gregory FW Todd in the late 1970's or early 1980's. The donor, Gregory FW Todd, B.A. 1976, received the piece in 2011 and donated it Yale University Art Gallery in 2016.
