Additional information

Object/Work type

calligraphy, hanging scrolls

Marks

It comes in a wooden box of which lid front says, "Calligraphy by venerable Jiun, Buddha's seed brings about linking obedience." (See kanji). The acrual calligraphy doesn't seem to follow the order of the kanji, however. The box lid inside bears a red square relief seal (unread); and another unread square seal. SO 5/21/2012\r\n慈雲尊者墨蹟 “佛種起縁従”

Inscriptions

"Buddha's seed (nature) follows (can be found in) in (the fundamental principle of Buddhist) cause and relationships (that can be found in all humans)."\r\n“佛種起縁従” (The box top records as this, but this must be Japanese reading order.)\r\n - - 従縁起 (Lotus Sutra『法華経』方便品 says 「佛種従縁起 。是故説一乗」\r\n - - 従弥陀 (Visually it might look as this.)\r\n

Signed

No signature but three seals: two at left "Jiun" and "Kou zu da" (see kanji); one kanboin: "Nyo renge fuchakusui". ["Kou" was an abbreviation of his name "Onkou" and "zuda" is kanji transcription for the Sanskrit of the same pronunciation meaning "to concentrate on the practice of Buddha's path by eliminating the carnal desire for clothing, food, and residence but to wash away the worldly dirt." ] The kanbouin opening seal may mean, "As if like a lotus flower not attach to the water."
Seals: 慈雲 光杜多 如蓮華不著水
