In spring 2022, the Gallery partnered with the Association of Art Museum Directors to host a provenance-research workshop focused on African art. The program brought together 30 early career curators, collection specialists, and researchers who are responsible for researching the ownership history of African objects at museums in the United States. It opened with a discussion of the legal and ethical considerations surrounding the stewardship of African art and presented a series of case studies and close-looking exercises—drawing in part from the Gallery’s holdings—to familiarize the participants with available methodologies and resources. The Gallery welcomed the opportunity to help foster meaningful dialogue around the provenance of African art with colleagues across the museum community.
