Yale University Art Gallery Bulletin 2009

2010 Honorable Mention, Annual Reports, Museum Publications Design Competition, American Association of Museums

2010 Third Place, Annual Reports, New England Museum Association Publication Awards Competition

An annual compilation of themed essays, exhibition highlights, and Gallery news, the Yale University Art Gallery Bulletin publishes original scholarship on works in the Gallery’s collection. Written by Gallery curators and outside scholars, contributions vary in length from extended studies to brief notes.

A review of gifts and acquisitions to the Gallery’s Department of Modern and Contemporary Art in the last ten years revealed that the presentation and teaching of sculpture at our museum was engaging a much more complex set of issues than the modernist works at the Gallery that had previously represented this discipline. Despite its changing forms, the discipline of sculpture has undergone little recent focused scholarly attention, warranting discussion, evaluation, and perhaps redefinition in this year’s Bulletin.
