The Yale School of Art was the most prestigious art school in America, even before Josef Albers began to shape its program in 1950. This catalogue, which accompanied an exhibition at the Yale University Art Gallery in 1981, celebrates the achievement of 20 painters and sculptors who graduated from the Yale School of Art between 1950 and 1970—two decades that represent a particularly fertile period in the life of the School. Artists featured in the catalogue include Jonathan Borofsky, Nancy Graves, Eva Hesse, Brice Marden, and Richard Serra. An introductory essay by Irving Sandler, art critic and professor of art history, investigates the question of how graduate training affects an artist’s career.
