This catalogue for an exhibition accompanying an international symposium on Giorgio Vasari (1511–1574) offers a penetrating look at the life, art, and writings of the Renaissance figure best known for his biographical sketches of Leonardo, Michelangelo, and more. The exhibition provided a first viewing of 14 documents from the Vasari family papers, which had been acquired by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, in the context of Vasari’s artistic and literary practice.

Emmet Gowin (born 1941) has been taking aerial photographs of the landscape in the United States, Mexico, Czechoslovakia, Asia, and the Middle East for over 20 years. In his most compelling photographs, one witnesses how man’s footprint has visually scarred and continually altered the earth’s surface. This extraordinary book, published in conjunction with the first major touring exhibition of Gowin’s photographs in over ten years, focuses on images created after 1986.

Accompanying the exhibition organized by the Yale University Art Gallery in collaboration with the Harvard University Art Museums, this publication is an invaluable contribution to the growing body of scholarship on the influential American painter Philip Guston (1913–1980). The book focuses on the years after 1960, when Guston shifted away from abstraction and developed an original figurative vocabulary.
