Unidad obrera en torno al programa de Ruiz Cortines (Unity of the Workers around the Program of Ruiz Cortines)

sheet: 81.3 × 60.3 cm (32 × 23 3/4 in.)

In this poster, Adolfo Mexiac combined a straightforward style with his passion for social justice. Sponsored by the Federation of Workers from the Federal District, the work urges laborers to come out in support of the program of President Ruiz Cortines (1952–58) on May 1, International Workers’ Day. While Cortines is remembered as a champion of social welfare programs, the president remained at odds with some unions after they came under tight government control in 1953. Mexiac alluded to these mixed sentiments with a laborer’s sign that reads, “Por el Aumento de Salarios” (“For the augmentation of wages”), indicative of economic conflict between those doing the work and those overseeing it.
