During the Revolutionary War, Jacob Read served as a captain in the Charleston, South Carolina, militia. He was a member of the Continental Congress between 1783 and 1786, and in 1787 he was elected speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives, where he served until 1794. Trumbull painted this miniature in Charleston in 1793. He shows Read standing in the left doorway in The Resignation of General Washington (1832.8).
