American Paintings and Sculpture

This portrait of John Brooks is part of a set of miniatures of Revolutionary War military officers painted by John Trumbull in preparation for several history paintings. Brooks left his medical practice to fight as captain of the Reading Minutemen at the Battle of Concord. At Saratoga, New York, he commanded the Eighth Massachusetts Regiment as a lieutenant colonel. In Trumbull's painting The Surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga (1832.7), Brooks stands to the right of center, resting his hand on a cannon. After the war, he resumed his medical career and became a leading physician. Trumbull painted Brooks's likeness for this miniature in Boston.
