Prints and Drawings

The painter-printmaker Édouard Vuillard often mixed distinctive characteristics of prints, drawings, textiles, and paintings into new combinations that challenged the traditional boundaries of these media. In the series Landscapes and Interiors, Vuillard took familiar scenes from everyday life as his subject matter, allowing his printmaking technique to take center stage. He used the flexibility of lithography to create a variety of effects in each print. Loose, spontaneous crayon strokes, for instance, contrast with competing yet carefully detailed textile patterns, as well as flat planes of color. To these, he applied an unusual rubbing technique that transfers the effect of textured paper onto the printed image. The resulting prints are multilayered and enigmatic; the various artistic strategies envelop and even partially obscure the domestic scenes, which thus suggest an air of mystery despite their intimacy.
