Joseph Earl Sheffield (1793-1882) commissioned Professor Julius Hubner, President of the Dresden Gallery to paint the family picture in May 1857 in Dresden; Painting was a present for Sheffield's daughter, Mrs. John A. Porter of New Haven, CT; Mrs. William Jarvis Boardman and Miss Mabel Thorpe Boardman (- 1946) Collection, Washington, by 1924-1946; Given to Yale by Mabel Thorpe Boardman's sisters, Mrs. W. Murray Crane and Mrs. Keep.
