Henry Farnam (1803-1883), M.A. (Hon.) 1871 Artist: Margaret F. Foley (American, 1827–1877)

1868

American Paintings and Sculpture

Margaret Foley, a self-taught sculptress, learned the art of sculpting by creating cameos, gradually carving more ambitious medallions, portraits, and busts. At the height of her career, she died of a brain tumor in Italy, where she had lived for twenty years. This bust of New Haven railroad tycoon Henry Farnam, with a bow tie and toga, equates him with venerable civic leaders of ancient Rome.
