American Decorative Arts

This is one example of the many views of buildings and places in the United States produced by Staffordshire potters specifically for the American market. The view is loosely based on an 1831 engraving by Fenner, Sears, & Co. after a drawing by H. Brown. The tree on the left is entirely the manufacturer’s invention, however, and although the couples in the foreground seem to be inspired by Brown’s depiction, their positioning in front of the Capitol varies significantly from the original. A border of white lace surrounds a transfer-printed border of leaves and vines. This inner border comes from a stock design that the manufacturer could reuse on many different pieces.
