Raga Hindol, from a Garland of Musical Modes (Ragamala) manuscript Artist: Unknown

18th century

Asian Art

Lauder Greenway, B.A. 1925, PH.D. 1930, who gifted this album of ragamala paintings to the Yale University Art Gallery, was informed at the time of purchase that it had come from the library of the maharaja of Kishangarh in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan. The ruler had apparently given it to a British Army officer in thanks for his service in quelling the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. However, we do not have concrete evidence to corroborate this account, put forth by art expert Imre Schwaiger. In cases like this, curators and conservators use other techniques, such as stylistic analysis, to attempt to confirm information related to provenance.
