Artist Julie Buffalohead frequently depicts animal characters from Ponca stories as stand-ins for human relationships. In this print, a red fox curls around a turtle that represents the continent of North America. The turtle holds shadow puppets of a crow and a fierce cat, which face off against a cartoonish monster at left. The monster wields a map of Nebraska—the homeland from which the Ponca were forcibly removed at gunpoint in 1876—along with an image of a bungalow similar to Buffalohead’s childhood home in the suburbs of Minneapolis. Both the state map, marked up with many tiny borders, as well as the lone manicured house suggest conflicting understandings of property and ownership between the Ponca and the white settlers.
