Bridge, Lake Luzerne, New York, from the series The League of Peace and Power Artist: Rebecca Soderholm (American, born 1972, M.F.A. 2007)

2011

Photography

In Bridge, Lake Luzerne, New York, Rebecca Soderholm captured a group of local teenagers as they were preparing to jump into a ravine from a rocky precipice. The work is part of the series The League of Peace and Power, which examines the ways in which people interact with the natural landscape. Here, a spot on the Hudson River in upstate New York is a site where boys traditionally prove their masculinity, the jump serving as a rite of passage. In Soderholm’s image, this place where the industrial and natural landscape meet becomes a threshold between childhood and adulthood.
