The lowered right hand, which is in a gesture of touching the earth (bhumisparsha mudra), refers to the moment in the final lifetime of the Historical Buddha Shakyamuni when he vanquished the forces of evil by calling on the powers of the earth to witness his right to seek enlightenment and escape from the endless cycle of rebirth. The earth responded positively, and he was able to resume his meditation and, ultimately, become the Buddha.
