Honoré Daumier’s forty lithographs ridiculing the aspirations of the feminists of the day were published in the satirical periodical Le charivari between January 30 and August 7, 1834. The series poked fun at the admirers of the feminist writer George Sand (the pen name of Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin), who were perceived as physically unfeminine and neglectful of their obligations as wives and mothers. Unlike his slightly older contemporary Eugène Delacroix, Daumier never illustrated a preexisting literary text, but with these images, accompanied by extensive captions, Daumier—who loved the theater—was illustrating a series of mini-dramas of his own invention.
